Good morning, Fayette County. Twelve hours. That's how long it took crews to tame the aftermath of Sunday's dramatic tanker fire on I-270, where 8,500 gallons of fuel created an inferno requiring specialized foam to extinguish. While the tanker driver escaped with minor injuries, the pickup driver who caused the collision remains at large, leaving behind questions and a highway that needed overnight structural repairs before Monday's reopening.
As summer temperatures rise, so do opportunities for community connection. Eyman Park transforms into a hub of activity on June 30 with ultra-marathoner Trey Tompkins leading a family-friendly walk rewarded with free Dairy Queen treats for the kids. Meanwhile, energy experts at PJM Interconnection are casting a concerned eye toward our power grid's future, warning that massive developments like Intel and Google facilities could strain our electricity supply faster than aging plants can be replaced.

🚒 Dramatic tanker fire closes major Columbus highway for 12 hours. The I-270 Southbound ramp to SR 161 Eastbound reopened Monday afternoon following a Sunday crash where a pickup truck collided with an 8,500-gallon fuel tanker. The collision caused the tanker to overturn and ignite, creating a massive fire requiring foam to extinguish. While the tanker driver sustained minor injuries, the pickup driver fled the scene and remains unidentified. ODOT partnered with Kokosing for overnight repairs, confirming all affected ramps are now structurally sound and safe for traffic.
🏞️ Summer fun kicks off with community block party at Eyman Park. Ultra-marathoner Trey Tompkins will lead a beginner-friendly one-mile family walk, with free Dairy Queen cones for participating children. The event will also feature free food, games, a dunk tank, splash pad fun, and community resource tables.
⚡ Ohio's power grid faces a looming energy crisis. PJM Interconnection warns central Ohio may experience an energy shortfall as massive developments like Intel and Google facilities strain the system. Summer heat could push demand to 166,000 megawatts, potentially triggering reserve shortfalls that would require paying customers to reduce usage. While a new natural gas plant in New Albany should help, it won't be operational before the projected shortfall in two years. Despite securing approval for 47,000 megawatts of additional capacity, PJM officials stress that aging power plants are retiring faster than new energy sources can come online.
