Fayette County • June 6, 2025
Good morning, Fayette County. The temperature isn't the only thing heating up this summer! A wave of free community events is about to sweep across our area, offering everything from picnics and splash parties to specialized gatherings for fathers and new mothers. Health Commissioner Leigh Cannon's invitation to "bring your family, friends, and neighbors" captures the spirit of these wellness-focused activities that kick off June 14th at the Farmers Market and continue through August.
On the financial front, two developments could strengthen vital county services. Ohio's Hospital Tax Pilot Program aims to recover the 27% loss hospitals currently absorb when treating Medicaid patients, while county commissioners have approved several essential contracts—including legal representation for those who can't afford it and waste removal services for the Animal Shelter. Public hearings are also scheduled for the county's application for 2025 Community Development Block Grant funds.

🏥 Ohio hospitals set to gain from new tax program. Highland County commissioners voiced support for the Ohio Hospital Tax Pilot Program, which aims to help local hospitals recover losses from Medicaid patients. Currently, hospitals receive only 73% of costs when treating the county's 9,181 Medicaid enrollees. The program would implement a hospital tax that qualifies for federal matching funds, potentially recovering the 27% loss without additional costs to customers. Commissioners plan to formally adopt the program on July 2, 2025, pending approvals from all required government channels.
📄 Fayette County approves key contracts for essential services. The commissioners greenlit several agreements Monday, including a $40,992 contract with the Ohio Public Defender's Office to provide legal representation for indigent individuals. They also approved a three-year waste removal contract with Rumpke for the Animal Shelter, authorized a $44,000 increase for the Bluegrass Boulevard Phase III Extension project, and accepted proposals for technical upgrades. Additionally, the board scheduled public hearings regarding the county's application for 2025 Community Development Block Grant funds.
