🚨 Safety rehearsal

Fairfield County • June 6, 2025

Good morning, Fairfield County. When seconds count and lives hang in the balance, preparation makes all the difference. That reality was on full display at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds recently, where a mock school bus rollover brought together 57 transportation staff from five districts to practice emergency response techniques. The dramatic training exercise, complete with student volunteers acting as injured passengers, exemplifies the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our community safe—similar to the quick-thinking Lancaster police officers who recently saved a woman's life on Mount Pleasant using drone technology and tactical coordination.

In stark contrast to these examples of teamwork stands the ongoing dysfunction at Etna Township, where a three-hour meeting erupted into finger-pointing and shouting rather than addressing an administrator's resignation threat. The tumultuous situation marks the potential third administrative departure in just 17 months, highlighting how quickly institutional knowledge can vanish when basic civility disappears—a sobering reminder that sometimes the most challenging rescues aren't physical but organizational.

🚌 Mock school bus rollover training prepares drivers for worst-case scenarios. Berne Union Local Schools led a comprehensive safety exercise at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds, bringing together 57 transportation staff from five school districts. Participants climbed into a rolled-over bus and watched as emergency crews demonstrated a full recovery operation with student volunteers acting as injured passengers. The training fostered valuable discussions and idea exchanges between drivers and first responders, strengthening county-wide emergency preparedness. Local fire departments, towing services, and medical transport teams partnered to make the realistic safety simulation possible.

🔥 Township trustees clash in toxic meeting without addressing resignation threat. After Etna Township Administrator Bill Spurgeon threatened to quit unless workplace issues were resolved, trustees declined to vote on a proposed $30,790 cultural assessment program. The three-hour meeting showcased the ongoing dysfunction, with trustees yelling over each other and pointing fingers. HR consultant Dyann McDowell identified three key problems: lack of order, decorum, and basic civility. This turmoil continues a three-year pattern of infighting that has driven away multiple administrators, with Spurgeon being the third person in the role in just 17 months.
