🚔 Badge farewell

Fairfield County • March 6, 2025

Good morning, Fairfield County. After 30 years of night shifts, traffic stops, and community service, Officer Erik Spiegel has finally hung up his badge at the Lancaster Police Department. His retirement marks the end of an era for local law enforcement, capping a career that earned him the prestigious Randy Bartow Award and left what colleagues describe as an "immeasurable impact" on the department. Three decades of dedication deserves more than just a gold watch.

In transportation news, there's light at the end of the tunnel—or rather, the bridge—as the Ohio 16 project over Raccoon Creek wraps up ahead of schedule this July. But don't put away those orange cones permanently; construction crews will be back in 2026 for a more extensive overhaul. Meanwhile, the courthouse has denied bail to Kyle Varney, the 26-year-old facing murder charges in connection with February's North Broad Street shootings that left two dead and one injured.

🚧 Ohio 16 bridge project ends soon, but construction returns later. The bridge replacement over Raccoon Creek will finish in July 2024 instead of the original October deadline, with bridges widened from two to three lanes. ODOT added $3.2 million to accommodate future expansion needs prompted by Intel's development plans. Workers will return in 2026 for a full-depth replacement of the entire 4.3-mile section, continuing into 2028. While Granville opposes the widening that would replace the grass median with a concrete barrier, ODOT maintains the road will remain striped for two lanes, with a possible third lane not materializing for 15 years.

🔫 Double murder suspect denied bail in Lancaster shootings. Kyle Varney, 26, faces two counts of murder and six counts of felonious assault after allegedly killing two men and injuring a woman in February. Police responded to a "behavioral emergency" at a North Broad Street house where Varney reportedly opened fire, prompting an officer to return fire. The suspect was hospitalized with critical injuries after the incident, which reportedly involved family members including his grandmother.
