🏬 Retail remix

Fairfield County • January 6, 2025

Good morning, Fairfield County. The retail landscape continues its dramatic remix as JCPenney, that 123-year-old cornerstone of American shopping, puts "Everything Must Go" signs on 120 stores nationwide. It's a bittersweet finale for a chain that once moved $1 billion in merchandise annually - roughly the GDP of a small nation - and leaves our local malls facing their biggest makeover since shoulder pads went out of style.

Speaking of transformations, while some doors close, others are opening. Lancaster's getting both a glimpse of its past, with a newly released collection of 2005 snapshots that feel simultaneously like yesterday and a lifetime ago, and a peek at its future, as ground breaks on a state-of-the-art senior living complex. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to remember where we've been.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🏪 Iconic retailer JCPenney puts 120 stores up for sale nationwide. After filing for bankruptcy in 2020 and facing continued sales decline, the 123-year-old department store chain is selling two major Central Ohio locations at Polaris Fashion Place and Tuttle Crossing Mall. The massive retail spaces, each around 150,000 square feet, are being listed at $6.24 per square foot as part of a larger portfolio sale. Commercial real estate advisor Newmark expects the nationwide store listings to raise more than $1 billion, marking another chapter in JCPenney's dramatic fall from its peak of $1 billion in annual sales and 1,609 locations in 1952. The sale also affects stores in Cincinnati, Toledo, and Cleveland, further shrinking the footprint of this once-dominant American retailer.
