🌲 Spa-tacular treats

Fairfield County • January 3, 2025

Good morning, Fairfield County. January may be the season of New Year's resolutions and packed gyms, but Northeast Ohio's wellness scene is having a moment that goes far beyond basic treadmill sessions. From forest bathing in Hocking Hills to Mediterranean-style thermal pools in Warren, a dozen luxurious spa retreats are transforming our region into something that feels more like Tuscany than the Midwest - complete with Gervasi Vineyard's new resort offering massages with a side of merlot.

Meanwhile, Lancaster High School is preparing to add some serious star power to its Athletic Wall of Honor. From Olympic-caliber talent to a legendary coach who guided teams to 19 straight district titles, Saturday's ceremony promises to be one for the record books. Though between us, we're pretty sure Coach Hamm's training sessions were more intense than any spa treatment.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🧘‍♀️ Northeast Ohio overflows with spa retreats for post-holiday renewal. From luxury vineyards to forest sanctuaries, twelve wellness destinations within driving distance of Cleveland offer everything from massages to meditation sessions. The newest addition is Gervasi Vineyard Resort in Canton, which added a full-service spa in 2023 to complement its winery, restaurants, and luxury suites. Unique offerings include Japanese forest bathing in Hocking Hills, silent retreats in Holmes County, and a year-round 90-degree Roman Bath at The Grand Resort in Warren. For families, even waterpark destinations like Kalahari Resort in Sandusky offer spa services, allowing parents to squeeze in relaxation while kids enjoy other activities.

🏆 Lancaster High School set to honor five athletic legends this weekend. The new inductees to the Gary Mauller Athletic Wall of Honor include legendary track coach Bob Hamm, who led teams to 19 straight district titles, and baseball coach Lennie Conrad, who guided the program to multiple championships including a Final Four appearance. The 2024 class also celebrates three outstanding athletes: Olympic Trials qualifier Nikolas Curtiss, state champion runner Stephen Sparks, and swimming star Olivia Schmelzer, who claimed multiple state titles and records. The Wall of Honor, named after a 47-year educator who began the tradition, continues his legacy of recognizing outstanding athletic achievement through donations made in his memory. The induction ceremony will take place Saturday before the boys' varsity basketball game against Horizon Science Academy.
