Good morning, Dev Test County. A powerful new chapter in Black journalism is unfolding right in our backyard. The James A. Washington Foundation launched with a fundraiser at South Dallas' Mokah Coffee & Tea, breathing fresh life into Dallas Weekly and creating vital pathways for young journalists. At a time when local newsrooms face mounting challenges nationwide, this initiative stands as a beacon of community-centered storytelling that centers Black experiences and perspectives.
Meanwhile, Chicago's beloved Portillo's is discovering that everything truly is bigger in Texas—including growing pains. After a spectacular $17 million opening in The Colony last year, the Italian beef sandwich chain has hit unexpected speed bumps with its rapid North Texas expansion. In more somber news, the Dallas ranching community mourns the loss of Asher Watkins, a local executive who died in a tragic buffalo encounter during a South African safari.

📰 Black journalism gets new life through James A. Washington Foundation. The foundation launched with a fundraiser at Mokah Coffee & Tea in South Dallas to support Dallas Weekly, a vital Black-led newsroom. Honoring the legacy of late publisher James A. Washington, the initiative comes as federal budget cuts threaten local journalism nationwide. The foundation aims to provide young journalists with training and mentorship while Dallas Weekly focuses on investigative reporting and cultural storytelling. This "new DW" represents a revitalized approach to community-centered reporting that centers Black experiences and perspectives.
🌭 Chicago chain Portillo's hits Texas-sized speed bump in Dallas-Fort Worth. CEO Michael Osanloo admitted the company opened too many locations too quickly in North Texas, with flat growth raising concerns about expansion pace. After a spectacular $17 million first-year performance at The Colony location in 2023, subsequent openings haven't matched expectations, leading Portillo's to lower growth projections from 10-12% to 5-7%. Despite challenges, the Italian beef sandwich chain isn't giving up on Texas, with two more locations still planned for Grand Prairie and DFW Airport.
🦬 Dallas executive killed by buffalo on South African hunting safari. Asher Watkins, 52, died after a "sudden and unprovoked" attack while tracking an unwounded buffalo in Limpopo Province. The safari company, Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, describes cape buffalo as "the most dangerous animal to pursue in Africa" on their website. Watkins was managing partner of Watkins Ranch Group, specializing in elite ranch properties, and had a background in hunting. The safari company is cooperating with authorities and supporting Watkins' family during this difficult time.
