🏢 Vacant building blues

Clermont County • March 12, 2025

Good morning, Clermont County. Nearly 2,800 vacant buildings stand as silent reminders of neighborhood decline across Cincinnati, but city officials have just approved a controversial solution. Starting February 2026, owners of long-empty properties must register and pay $250, a requirement that squeaked through Council with a narrow 5-4 vote. The new ordinance has property owners divided between those who see necessary accountability and others who fear yet another layer of bureaucratic red tape.

From urban renewal to rural support systems, our community continues seeking balance. While millions across the tri-state region face potential food stamp reductions through Congressional budget proposals, Warren County's Veterans Honor Court offers a different kind of sustenance. This nationally-recognized program has become a lifeline for veterans like Scott Horton, who found not just accountability but family after struggling with the invisible wounds of war – transforming from a participant to mentor helping prevent veteran suicide.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

Brewing Locally Image

🏢 Cincinnati cracks down on vacant buildings with new registry requirement. Starting February 2026, owners of buildings empty for over six months must register for $250 and designate a local contact person. The contentious ordinance, which passed by a narrow 5-4 City Council vote, aims to address nearly 2,800 vacant properties that plague neighborhoods. Certain properties will be exempt, including government buildings, seasonal homes, and those under renovation. Critics worry the new regulation will burden small property owners while adding unnecessary bureaucracy to existing building codes.

🍽️ Food stamps for millions hang in the balance. A Congressional budget resolution threatens to cut SNAP benefits for over 2 million people across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Ironically, many affected districts are represented by Republican lawmakers who may support these cuts. The program, commonly known as food stamps, provides essential nutrition assistance to vulnerable populations. Experts from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and University of Kentucky are discussing both the practical impacts and political implications of these potential cuts.

🎖️ Veterans find healing through specialized court program in Warren County. After sustaining a brain injury from an IED in Iraq, Army veteran Scott Horton struggled with civilian life until finding support through the Warren County Veterans Honor Court. This specialized program, now recognized as a national Mentor Court, provides a non-adversarial approach to helping veterans overcome challenges and reintegrate into society. Judge Timothy Tepe serves as a "father figure" to participants, offering both support and accountability. For Horton, who has since graduated and become a peer mentor, the program created a family-like environment that helped him find purpose in preventing veteran suicide.
