Athens County • June 19, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. After months of delays and heated debate, Athens' new fire station saga has finally reached its conclusion. The City Council narrowly approved the contested final payment, with Councilmember Michael Wood ultimately supporting the measure despite his long-standing concerns about the additional $210,024 added without council consultation. This resolution comes as welcome progress after the payment had been stalled since November following a costly city scam.
Academic excellence is shining brightly at Ohio University, where an impressive 2,200 undergraduates achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs to earn spots on the president's list. From community initiatives to research fellowships, these funds will help preserve our region's natural treasuresβwith applications due by July 15 for those looking to make a difference.

π₯ Athens City Council finally approves contested fire station payment. The council narrowly passed the final payment for Athens' new fire station after Councilmember Michael Wood initially threatened to abstain. Wood eventually relented, though he had long criticized city administrators for adding $210,024 to the payment without consulting council members. The additional funds, taken partly from the Fire Department's supply budget, covered maintenance for green space, a fitness court, and parking facilities. The payment had been delayed since November after the city lost over $700,000 in a scam.
