Good morning, Athens County. The future is powering up along Columbus Road, where an abandoned gas station is being transformed into a modern EV charging hub. This innovative project, backed by $225,183 in grant funding, represents more than just new infrastructure—it's preserving local history while making southern Ohio more accessible for electric vehicle drivers. The four-port facility will maintain the original building for community use, becoming the latest jewel in the ongoing Columbus Road revitalization effort.

Meanwhile, a surprising trend is reshaping county finances as Southeast Ohio Regional Jail now houses just 155 inmates despite capacity for 220. The resulting budget strain has increased per-inmate costs from $85 to $108 in a single year. On a brighter note, academic excellence continues to flourish at Ohio University, where an impressive 6,700 students earned recognition on the dean's and provost's lists for their scholarly achievements last semester, including dozens from our local communities.

🔌 Athens transforms abandoned gas station into EV charging hub. The former Russell's Gas Station on Columbus Road will become a modern electric vehicle facility, part of a larger initiative to make southern Ohio more accessible for EV drivers. The Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC) is partnering with the Athens County Port Authority, which received $225,183 in grant funding to clean up contamination at the site. The project will feature four charging ports while preserving the original building for community rooms and office space. This development is the latest in the Columbus Road redevelopment effort, positioned near a new hospital and recently approved bike path.

🏢 Ohio jails face budget crunch as inmate numbers plummet. The Southeast Ohio Regional Jail now houses only 155 inmates despite having capacity for 220, creating financial strain for Athens County. Sheriff Rodney Smith attributes the decline to reduced crime rates, faster rehabilitation placements, and better drug enforcement. Operating costs remain steady despite fewer inmates, driving the per-inmate cost from $85 to $108 in just one year. Meanwhile, Ohio continues investing millions in jail construction and renovations statewide, with officials questioning why the state isn't instead supporting existing underutilized facilities.
