Athens County • June 5, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. Driving safely takes on new meaning for Athens seniors thanks to the area's first CarFit event, where trained volunteers and pre-med students transformed the County Fairgrounds into a driver safety clinic on Saturday. This innovative program helps older drivers make critical adjustments to their vehicles—from seat position to mirror angles—addressing the sobering reality that while seniors tend to be safer drivers, they face greater injury risks when accidents occur.
Meanwhile, significant transitions are underway across the county. Athens Public Transit could see a major reorganization as commissioners explore creating a transit authority that could generate up to $1 million through a potential sales tax. And after an impressive 33-year career safeguarding our democratic processes, elections director Debbie Quivey has announced her retirement, with July 25 marking her final day of service. Her departure represents the end of an era in local election administration.

🚗 Athens' first CarFit event puts senior driver safety first. Trained volunteers helped older drivers properly adjust their car settings at the Athens County Fairgrounds on Saturday. The program, founded by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, aims to reduce injuries among seniors, who are more vulnerable in crashes despite being safer drivers. Pre-med students from Ohio University served as technicians, checking everything from seat positioning to mirror angles. Three more CarFit events are scheduled this month across southeast Ohio, continuing the mission to keep older drivers safe on the road.
🚌 Athens County explores major transit reorganization for additional funding. Commissioners are considering creating a county or regional transit authority to tap into more resources for Athens Public Transit. A quarter-percent transit sales tax could generate up to $1 million based on previous tax seasons. Athens Public Transit, currently operated by Hocking-Athens-Perry County Community Action, has already doubled ridership after implementing fare-free transit through an AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio grant. The reorganization would require commissioner resolutions and voter approval for any proposed transit tax levy.
