Athens County • June 4, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. Democracy is taking a hands-on approach in Nelsonville, where residents aren't just voting for change—they're literally drawing it. With access to Dave's Redistricting program, citizens are mapping their political future as the city transitions to ward-based representation. This grassroots cartography effort, guided by the League of Women Voters, represents a remarkable moment of civic engagement where everyday people are sketching the boundaries that will shape their government for years to come.
Meanwhile, summer opportunities abound across our region. Ohio University's renowned journalism workshops and diverse educational programs are helping students of all ages explore potential careers from broadcasting to international studies. And there's transformative news for our most vulnerable neighbors—HAPCAP has secured $2 million to revolutionize homeless shelter options, creating spaces that offer not just beds, but dignity and security. These developments remind us that whether through maps, education, or housing, Athens County is building pathways to better futures.

🗺️ Nelsonville citizens gain power to shape their political future. Residents can now draw their own ward maps using Dave's Redistricting program as the Ohio city transitions from a charter to statutory form of government. The change, approved by voters last November, will replace the current at-large council with a system where four of seven members represent specific wards. Trevor Martin from the Ohio League of Women Voters is guiding this transparent process, hoping to present a final map to council in July. While the current council remains neutral, the newly elected representatives will ultimately approve or reject the proposed wards after taking office in January.
🎓 Ohio University's summer programs offer enrichment for all ages. From high school journalism workshops to law institutes, OU provides diverse opportunities for students to explore potential careers. The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism hosts one of the nation's longest-running workshops, offering nine specialized tracks including broadcasting and sports writing. For younger students, Tech Savvy and Kids on Campus allow exploration of new activities, while college students can participate in study abroad programs spanning from Sicily to Thailand. These summer offerings help participants gain valuable experience and college credits while connecting with peers and professionals.
