Westerville • August 5, 2025
Good morning, Westerville. Mark your calendars for Tuesday's National Night Out, when neighborhoods across Central Ohio will transform into hubs of community connection. From Columbus to Dublin, sixteen different locations will host block parties, cookouts, and safety demonstrations as part of this nationwide initiative to strengthen police-community partnerships. It's a perfect opportunity to meet the officers who serve your area while enjoying family-friendly activities between 4 PM and 8 PM.
Meanwhile, two pressing issues are gaining attention across Ohio. Consumer advocates are challenging the $237 million Ohioans paid for outdated coal plants through controversial subsidies, calling for an audit of these charges before they expire August 14. On a more hopeful front, the Ohio PROMISE initiative is making remarkable progress helping child care centers better serve children with disabilities, with participating centers seeing a 38% increase in inclusion rates through specialized training and support.

๐ฐ Ohioans paid $237 million for outdated coal plants. Consumer advocates are demanding an audit of these controversial subsidies, which were authorized by House Bill 6 as a "Legacy Generation Resource Rider." The Ohio Consumers' Counsel and Ohio Manufacturers' Association Energy Group filed a joint request with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), calling the charges "imprudent" and "unreasonable." While PUCO has ordered updated tariffs to remove the charge, this only affects the final 13 days before it expires on August 14. There are currently no plans to reimburse residents for the money already collected.
โฟ Ohio tackles child care exclusion for disabled children. Ohio PROMISE is offering free training to help child care centers better serve children with disabilities who are often rejected. The state-funded initiative provides online courses and coaching for teachers on inclusive practices, leading to a 38% increase in disabled children at publicly funded centers. Director Selina Likely, whose own daughter was once expelled for biting, now champions inclusion at Edwards Creative Learning Center where about 10% of children have diagnosed disabilities. Similar programs in Vermont and Summit County, Ohio show promising results, though funding uncertainties remain a challenge for nationwide progress.
