Good morning, Westerville. A significant chapter in Columbus dining history closed when the Jai Lai Café served its final meal in 1996. For 63 years, this institution evolved from a post-Prohibition whiskey saloon into Columbus's largest restaurant, seating over 1,000 guests and becoming the regular haunt of Ohio State football coaches Woody Hayes and Earle Bruce. The legendary establishment that once served up prime rib and turtle soup to generations of Columbus residents now lives only in memory.

On a brighter note, the Columbus Zoo welcomes its newest resident as a 215-pound Asian elephant calf prepares for her public debut on Monday. Born to 16-year-old Sunny after a 22-month pregnancy, the yet-unnamed baby represents hope for this endangered species. Meanwhile, community safety concerns persist in east Columbus after three people, including two children, were shot in a neighborhood where residents report frequent gunfire, highlighting ongoing challenges in creating safe spaces for families.

🔫 Three shot, including two children, in east Columbus neighborhood. A resident named Kai says the area frequently experiences gunfire, making it unsafe for families with young children. All victims were shot in the legs and are expected to recover, though police have not identified a suspect or motive. The neighborhood has a history of violence, with a nearby bar shut down in 2022 due to repeated incidents. Kai believes more community resources like food pantries and affordable mental health care could help reduce crime in the area.

🍽️ Columbus lost a dining legend after 63 years of service. The Jai Lai Café, which opened in 1933 following Prohibition's end, began as a whiskey-focused saloon before evolving into a beloved restaurant known for prime rib and turtle soup. In 1955, it relocated to Olentangy River Road, becoming Columbus's largest restaurant with seating for over 1,000 guests. The establishment became a favorite spot for Ohio State football coaches Woody Hayes and Earle Bruce, who held weekly press conferences there. After decades as a Columbus dining institution, freeway construction hurt business, and Jai Lai finally closed in 1996.
