Westerville • June 30, 2025
Good morning, Westerville. Fifteen years after his passing, Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer's legacy of courage, respect, and putting country over ego offers a timely reminder of what sustains democracy. His stepdaughter Elizabeth Emens reflects on how these "old-fashioned" virtues—once taken for granted—now appear revolutionary in our increasingly polarized landscape. As America approaches its 250th birthday, perhaps these foundational principles deserve a fresh look.
Meanwhile, our community faces both tragedy and triumph this week. A deadly shooting Saturday night claimed the life of 18-year-old Abdiwali Isaak in west Columbus, with authorities still seeking suspects. In brighter news, local teen Sara Bailey has captured the prestigious Ohio 4-H Achievement Award and 2025 Teen of the Year honors. The accomplished Beaver Local graduate will represent Ohio at the National 4-H Congress while pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian at OSU.

⚖️ Democracy needs old-fashioned virtues, says Chief Justice's stepdaughter. Elizabeth Emens reflects on her stepfather, Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer, 15 years after his death, seeing his "old-fashioned" values in a new light. Moyer, who served 24 years on Ohio's Supreme Court, demonstrated courage by defeating a politically-driven incumbent in 1986, and championed slow, steady progress through listening and careful speaking. As America approaches its 250th year, Emens argues that Moyer's principles—respect, decency, rule of law, and valuing country over ego—are essential for preserving democracy in today's divisive political landscape.
🔫 Teenage life cut short in deadly Columbus shooting. An 18-year-old man died and two others were injured when gunfire erupted Saturday night in west Columbus. Police responded to Avonia Drive around 10 p.m., where they found three victims including a juvenile. Abdiwali Isaak was pronounced dead less than an hour later at a local hospital. Authorities have no suspects yet and are asking residents to submit any video recordings from the area to help with their investigation.
🏆 Local teen's 4-H journey leads to prestigious state honor. Sara Bailey from Rogers received the Ohio 4-H Achievement Award for Personal Development and was named 2025 Ohio 4-H Teen of the Year. The 18-year-old Beaver Local High School graduate has shown livestock, served on the Junior Fair Board, and participated in leadership roles throughout her 4-H career. Bailey plans to attend Ohio State University to study animal sciences with aspirations of becoming a livestock and equine veterinarian. She will represent Ohio at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta this November alongside 31 other award recipients.
