Westerville • May 8, 2025
Good morning, Westerville. The digital age has created a troubling new version of "phone a friend" — scam artists posing as bail bondsmen extracting money from worried parents. An 81-year-old resident recently lost $1,300 to such a scheme before his quick thinking and bank intervention halted further losses. This serves as a stark reminder that verification calls to family members should always precede financial transactions, especially when emotions are running high.
On a brighter note, excellence continues to bloom in our agricultural community as three West Liberty-Salem students earned the prestigious Ohio FFA State degree through exceptional leadership and dedication. Meanwhile, international scholars can breathe easier after Ohio State PhD candidate Prasanna Oruganti had her immigration status restored following a brief revocation due to a minor traffic violation, highlighting the complex challenges faced by international students contributing to our academic community.

🚨 Elderly man loses $1,300 in fake bail bond scam. An 81-year-old Bowling Green resident was tricked by someone claiming to work for All Ohio Bail Bonds, demanding payment for his son's release. The scammer convinced the father to pay $1,300 via bank card, then attempted to extract an additional $625 for an "ankle monitor." Fortunately, the victim realized it was a scam when his son confirmed he never requested bail, and his bank froze the card and promised to return the funds. Police are investigating the case and plan to issue a subpoena once they receive transaction reports.
🌾 Three West Liberty-Salem students achieve prestigious Ohio FFA State degree. Owen Barger, Shyanne McClintick, and Ella Vondenhuevel earned this high honor through exceptional leadership and commitment to agricultural education. The State FFA Degree, awarded to only a small percentage of members, requires at least two years of membership, completion of a Supervised Agricultural Experience, and extensive FFA involvement. This achievement represents a significant milestone on the path toward the even more selective American FFA Degree. The students' success was supported by school staff and chaperones throughout their FFA journey.
🎓 International student's immigration status restored after surprise revocation. Ohio State PhD candidate Prasanna Oruganti had her status reinstated following a federal lawsuit filed in April. The Trump administration had revoked her status due to a minor traffic violation from 2020, prompting quick legal action. Judge Algenon Marbley initially granted a temporary restraining order before the case was dismissed on April 30. This case appears part of a larger situation where the federal government has restored records for potentially thousands of international students whose database entries were abruptly terminated.
