Good morning, Westerville. "Love your neighbor as yourself" isn't just a central message in Temple Israel's vibrant new muralβit's a living principle taking colorful form across our community. Artist Thom Glick's creation, funded through a $5,000 GCAC grant, now adorns the temple's exterior wall with Jewish traditions, meaningful symbols, and even a local squirrel named "Marvin," bringing warmth and life to a shared space that reflects our community's diverse tapestry.
As art flourishes in one corner of our county, urgent needs grow in another. Star House is responding to the alarming surge in youth homelessness by opening a second drop-in center in a vacant Reeb Avenue church. With the organization now serving nearly double the young people it did in 2021, this $10 million expansion project (with $6 million already raised) represents a critical lifeline for vulnerable youth navigating challenging housing realities, with the new location set to open its doors in 2026.

π¨ Temple Israel's new mural celebrates Jewish life with vibrant symbolism. Created by artist Thom Glick through a $5,000 Greater Columbus Arts Council grant, the colorful artwork adorns the temple's exterior wall facing a garden space. The mural features Jewish traditions, symbols, and even includes a squirrel character named "Marvin" who frequents the area, with the central message "Love your neighbor as yourself." Temple Israel's executive director Natalie Adler described the project as "incredibly meaningful," bringing "new life, warmth, and meaning" to their community space. The GCAC has funded 81 murals throughout Franklin County since 2022, with 21 new grant recipients announced for 2025.
π Columbus youth homelessness center expands as need skyrockets. Star House, which serves homeless individuals ages 14-24, is opening a second drop-in center in a vacant church on Reeb Avenue. The organization served 1,606 young people in 2024, nearly double the 819 it served in 2021, with demand growing since the end of COVID-era eviction protections. CEO Ann Bischoff cites affordable housing shortages as a major challenge, noting "four people waiting for every one low-income unit."
