πŸ” Burger bonanza

Westerville • March 11, 2025

Good morning, Westerville. The digital age has brought remarkable conveniences, but also new vulnerabilities. Across Ohio, scammers impersonating utility providers are targeting residents for personal information, while a Columbus mother of five woke up to find her $950 SNAP benefits completely drainedβ€”leaving just 46 cents to feed her family. These sobering incidents serve as stark reminders that in today's connected world, vigilance is as necessary as electricity or water.

For those seeking brighter news, burger enthusiasts can celebrate as Bareburger announces its expansion to Easton Gateway this summer. The popular chain is bringing its 5,000-square-foot restaurant to the former Melt location, where up to 150 diners can enjoy everything from grass-fed beef to exotic bison and elk options. After a decade in the Short North, this second Columbus location signals both recovery and growth for the beloved burger destination.

⚠️ Scammers impersonating utility providers target Ohio residents for personal information. Amy Carles from the Ohio Consumers' Counsel recently warned Lima Rotarians about these deceptive tactics during National Consumer Protection Week. She explained how scammers may request sensitive information or claim fees are owed, potentially using obtained details to switch providers without consent. Carles emphasized the importance of recognizing these scams to avoid falling victim to them. Concerned citizens can learn more about protection strategies through the Ohio Consumers' Counsel website.

πŸ’³ SNAP benefits stolen from Ohio mother of five. A Columbus woman woke up to find her $950 SNAP benefits drained by scammers making purchases in Chicago. The theft left J. Johnson with just 46 cents to feed her five children, including one celebrating a birthday. Since December, the federal government has stopped reimbursing victims of such scams, leaving families like Johnson's with no way to recover stolen benefits. Ohio officials recommend using the ConnectEBT app's card lock feature, changing PINs regularly, and watching for skimming devices to protect benefits.

πŸ” Bareburger expands to Easton Gateway after decade in Short North. The burger chain will open its second Columbus location this summer in the former Melt Bar & Grilled space at 4206 Worth Ave. Local franchisee George Mathew says they're targeting the dine-in crowd at Easton while their original High Street location recovers from pandemic impacts and nearby construction. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant will seat up to 150 customers and feature the chain's signature grass-fed beef burgers alongside bison, elk, and vegan options. Mathew hints at possible future expansion to Dublin if demand warrants.
