Vinton County • August 1, 2025
Good morning, Vinton County. The ancient art of mapmaking is alive and well in Nelsonville, where citizen Trevor Martin has meticulously crafted a four-ward map that could shape the city's political landscape for years to come. With support from the Ohio League of Women Voters, this grassroots redistricting effort achieves remarkable population balance—less than 5% deviation between wards—offering a textbook example of civic engagement as the city transitions from charter to statutory government.
From accountability to wellness, our region continues to evolve. Former veterans official John Thomas recently repaid $1,324 after leaving a training conference early for a Las Vegas getaway while still collecting pay. Meanwhile, the Meigs County Health Department is transforming workplace culture with their new Employee Wellness Room, complete with exercise equipment and stress-relief tools. Their partnership with The Nook for mindfulness exercises reflects a growing recognition that employee wellbeing extends far beyond the workplace.

🗺️ Nelsonville citizens craft new ward map for incoming city council. Trevor Martin, with help from the Ohio League of Women Voters, presented a citizen-drawn four-ward map that will be considered by the next council. The map achieves less than 5% population deviation, indicating an equitable distribution across wards. Under Nelsonville's transition from charter to statutory government, the incoming council will have 90 days starting January 1 to adopt a ward map. While all council members will be elected at-large in the upcoming election, candidates will have the option to run for specific wards in November 2027.
💰 Former veterans official repaid $1,324 for improper travel expenses. John Thomas, who resigned as executive director of Gallia County Veterans Service Commission in February 2024, was found to have left a training conference early for a personal trip to Las Vegas with his wife. The Auditor of State's Special Investigations Unit determined Thomas was paid for three days plus expenses while not attending the conference. Though a special prosecutor declined to pursue criminal charges, Thomas repaid the full amount in March 2025. Since 2019, the Special Investigations Unit has helped secure 142 convictions resulting in over $13 million in restitution.
