Vinton County • July 31, 2025
Good morning, Vinton County. Democracy in action looks different at every level, and Nelsonville is seeing it firsthand as citizen Trevor Martin presents a carefully crafted four-ward map to city council. This grassroots redistricting effort, supported by the Ohio League of Women Voters, divides the population with remarkable equity—less than 5% deviation between wards. The incoming council will have 90 days starting January to adopt this community-created plan or develop their own vision for the city's political geography.
Meanwhile, wellness initiatives are transforming workplaces across our region. The Meigs County Health Department has created a dedicated space with exercise equipment and stress-relief tools for employees, while also extending mindfulness sessions to the broader community. In less uplifting news, a former veterans official has repaid $1,324 after an investigation revealed he left a training conference early for a Las Vegas vacation while still collecting pay—a reminder that accountability matters in public service.

🗺️ Citizens craft Nelsonville's future with new ward map. Trevor Martin, with help from the Ohio League of Women Voters, presented a four-ward map to Nelsonville's city council. The citizen-drawn map divides the population evenly with less than 5% deviation between wards. Starting January 1, the next city council will have 90 days to adopt this or another ward map. If no action is taken within that timeframe, the director of public service will make subdivisions as deemed necessary.
🏥 Meigs County Health Department launches wellness initiatives for staff and community. The department is pursuing reaccreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board while implementing its Strategic Plan and Community Health Improvement goals. A new Employee Wellness Committee has created a dedicated Wellness Room equipped with exercise equipment and stress-relief tools. The health department also offers mental health support through mindfulness sessions and encourages participation in community service activities. These efforts aim to foster a culture of wellness that extends beyond the workplace into the broader Meigs County community.
💰 Former veterans official repaid $1,324 for improper travel expenses. John Thomas, who resigned as executive director of the Gallia County Veterans Service Commission in February 2024, left a training conference early to vacation in Las Vegas with his wife. An investigation by Ohio's Special Investigations Unit found he was wrongfully paid for three days of work plus travel expenses while no longer attending the conference. Thomas repaid the full amount in March 2025 following a special audit, and prosecutors declined to pursue criminal charges. Since 2019, the Special Investigations Unit has helped secure 142 convictions resulting in over $13 million in restitution.
