Vinton County • June 5, 2025
Good morning, Vinton County. The wheels of progress are turning for Ohio's outdoor enthusiasts as $1.5 million flows into neighboring Ross County's Paint Creek Trail. This investment, part of Governor DeWine's $52 million statewide initiative, will transform 3.8 miles of former railroad corridor into improved pathways for walkers and cyclists alike – adding another chapter to our region's growing active transportation story.
Meanwhile, Chillicothe police tackled a dizzying 27 incidents during a single-day crime spree earlier this month, from retail theft investigations to warrant arrests. And just down the road in Athens, senior drivers are finding a safer path forward through the county's first CarFit event, where trained volunteers adjusted everything from seat positions to mirror angles – a timely service considering the CDC reports 740 senior citizens are hospitalized daily from car crashes nationwide. Three more events are scheduled across southeast Ohio this month.

🚲 Ohio pumps $1.5 million into Ross County's Paint Creek Trail upgrade. The funding, part of a larger $52 million statewide active transportation initiative, will rehabilitate a 3.8-mile segment stretching from Frankfort through multiple townships. Governor Mike DeWine emphasized how the Transportation Alternatives Program supports safer, more connected spaces for walking and biking while enhancing public safety and community health. The project was one of 44 selected across 33 Ohio counties based on safety, connectivity, and implementation readiness. Construction will address surface repairs and improve safety features on this popular multi-use path that follows a former railroad corridor.
🚓 Chillicothe police tackle 27 incidents in single-day crime spree. The June 3 incidents ranged from drug arrests during traffic stops to theft investigations at local businesses including Walmart and Rural King. Officers also responded to domestic disturbances, a non-suspicious death, and multiple juvenile cases involving a missing person and vehicle theft. Several warrant arrests were made throughout the day, while numerous traffic violations were documented across the city. Police continue investigating several cases and encourage residents to report suspicious activity.
🚗 Athens' first CarFit event helps seniors drive safer. Trained volunteers at the Athens County Fairgrounds checked and adjusted vehicle setups for older drivers, ensuring proper seat positioning, mirror angles, and safety features. The program aims to reduce injuries and fatalities among senior drivers, who are more vulnerable in crashes despite being safer drivers overall. According to the CDC, 740 senior citizens are hospitalized daily from car crashes, with 25 dying each day. Three more CarFit events are scheduled this month across southeast Ohio.
