Good morning, Union County. Twenty-one years in prison is the price Tyrone Gray will pay for a fatal confrontation that began with a handbag and ended with gunfire inside an Ohio mall shoe store. The 2022 incident at Sole Stop left 25-year-old Dontarious Sylvester dead and more than a dozen shoppers witnessing what prosecutors successfully argued wasn't self-defense, despite Gray's claims to the contrary.

Meanwhile, brighter community developments are unfolding across our area. The Depot at Public Square has finally opened its doors after years of anticipation, marking a significant milestone in Plain City's uptown revitalization efforts. And as Marysville High School adjusts to transportation challenges by extending its busing limit to two miles, administrators have found a middle-ground solution with cluster stops rather than eliminating service entirely—a creative response to the ongoing driver shortage affecting schools throughout Ohio.

🔫 Mall shooting turns deadly in Ohio shoe store dispute. Tyrone Gray, 27, will serve at least 21 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering 25-year-old Dontarious Sylvester at The Mall at Tuttle Crossing in 2022. The fatal confrontation began when Sylvester hit Gray with a handbag during an argument inside Sole Stop, prompting Gray to pull out a gun and shoot him. Though Gray claimed self-defense and was acquitted of aggravated murder charges, he was convicted of murder with firearm specifications and inducing panic. More than a dozen shoppers witnessed the shooting before Gray calmly exited the store and called 911.

🚌 Marysville High School cuts bus service for students within 2 miles. The school board voted to increase the high school busing limit from 1.5 to 2 miles, forcing affected students to find alternative transportation. The change comes amid persistent driver shortages, with 17 drivers resigning last year while only nine replacements were hired. High schoolers outside the limit will now gather at four cluster stops around the city. Officials chose this approach over eliminating high school busing entirely, which some other Ohio districts have done when facing similar staffing challenges.
