🎬 Cinema revival

Good morning, Summit County. The silver screen is coming back to life in historic fashion this Halloween as the Linda Theatre reopens its doors with "The Mephistophiliac," a locally-produced indie horror film. After six months of renovations, this Goodyear Heights landmark now boasts a new projector, upgraded concessions including alcohol sales, and a vision of becoming an independent cinema hub—quite the resurrection story for a theater named after the owner's grandmother.

While one local institution begins its next chapter, another celebrates an impressive milestone: the Akron Beacon Journal marks 185 years as our county's largest newsroom, with four Pulitzer Prizes to its name. Meanwhile, families in Cuyahoga Falls are preparing for significant change as the Board of Education voted to close Preston Elementary in 2026, with plans to redraw district boundaries and transform the building into a preschool and family center.

🎬 Historic Akron theater reopens with indie horror film premiere on Halloween. The Linda Theatre in Goodyear Heights will debut "The Mephistophiliac," a psychological thriller co-written by local actors Kevin Winstead and Tim Novotny. After six months of renovations, the theater now features a new projector, upgraded concession stand with alcohol sales, and plans for showing independent films rather than first-run movies. Owner David Schweyer, who grew up across the street, named the theater after his grandmother and envisions it becoming a hub for independent cinema alongside his adjacent Afterlife Nightclub. The Halloween premiere includes a Q&A with the filmmakers and an after-party with live music and a costume contest.
