Summit County • July 25, 2025
Good morning, Summit County. Summer road warriors, take note: Green's Mount Pleasant Road is closing for a 75-day makeover starting July 28, with bridge rehabilitation work shutting down a key section between Lutz and Arlington Avenues. While detours will guide you around the construction zone, it's a reminder that infrastructure improvements often come with temporary inconveniences for long-term gains.
Meanwhile, two identity quests are unfolding across our community. Beyond Expectations Barber College's "Cutting Barriers" program is teaching students how to provide haircuts for clients with disabilities, recognizing that looking good is fundamental to feeling good for everyone. And in postal politics, the City of Green is making headway in its fight for a unified ZIP code after years of being fractured across six different postal designations – a change that could finally give the city the cohesive community identity it deserves.

🚧 Green's Mount Pleasant Road will close for 75 days. Starting July 28, the closure affects the section between Lutz Avenue Northwest and Arlington Avenue Northwest due to bridge rehabilitation work. The Summit County Engineer announced the project includes replacing beams and the deck, with access maintained for homes and businesses. A detour route using Arlington Avenue, Strausser Street, and Lutz Avenue will be posted for motorists. All construction work remains subject to weather conditions.
✂️ Barber students learn to cut hair for clients with disabilities. Beyond Expectations Barber College partnered with Gateways to Better Living for a program called "Cutting Barriers" that teaches barber students how to work with people with disabilities. The initiative included both classroom training on different disabilities and practical experience, with about 35 Gateways clients receiving haircuts from students. "When you look good, you feel good," explained Eryca Garrett, the college's co-director, emphasizing that everyone deserves a great haircut. The program benefits both the clients who receive stylish cuts and the barber students who add valuable skills to their professional repertoire.
📮 Green fights for a single ZIP code amid identity confusion. The U.S. House passed bipartisan legislation that would create unique ZIP codes for over 65 communities, including the City of Green in Ohio. Currently divided by six different ZIP codes established when Green was a sparsely populated township, the city has lost tax revenue and faced administrative challenges. Rep. Emilia Sykes championed the bill, arguing that Green's fragmented postal identity has diminished community cohesion. The legislation now awaits Senate consideration before Green can finally claim its own postal identity.
