Summit County • May 23, 2025
Good morning, Summit County. Pride is blooming in unexpected places this summer as Stow Collaboration for Change prepares to host the suburb's first-ever LGBTQ+ Pride Cookout on June 21. It's a milestone five years in the making for the nonprofit, creating visibility and connection in a community where acting secretary Aaron Yeager once couldn't imagine living as his authentic self. The free event at Silver Springs Lodge represents how even traditionally conservative spaces are evolving to embrace diversity and inclusion.
Meanwhile, the landscape continues changing in more literal ways across the county. Norton's City Council has greenlit a 100-home subdivision despite infrastructure concerns, while in Springfield, heads are turning for all the right reasons. Bert and Kelly Slone's glass-enclosed modern marvel stands as both architectural statement and personal triumph after Kelly's battle with stage 4 lymphoma, proving that sometimes the most striking additions to a neighborhood come with equally remarkable stories.

🌈 A small Ohio suburb hosts its first-ever LGBTQ+ Pride Cookout. Stow Collaboration for Change (SC4C) is bringing the free community event to Silver Springs Lodge on June 21, marking the nonprofit's fifth anniversary. Founded in 2020 to address racial inequity and LGBTQ+ rights in the predominantly white, conservative community, SC4C aims to create an inclusive space where all generations can connect. Aaron Yeager, who couldn't envision living in Stow as an out LGBTQ+ person during his high school years, now serves as SC4C's acting secretary and is helping create the visibility he lacked growing up.
🏗️ Norton approves 100-home subdivision amid infrastructure concerns. The City Council voted 6-1 to approve a preliminary plat for a major subdivision on 51 acres along Reimer Road. Developer JLP Development LLC plans to build homes on quarter-acre lots, with Council previously rezoning the parcels with a reversion clause if plans fall through. Councilman Tousley opposed the project, arguing the lots were too small for the city's character. The meeting also saw approval of a $94,750 police vehicle lease and $10,200 for school zone lights at Hametown Christian Academy.
🏠 Springfield couple's glass-enclosed modern home turns heads in traditional neighborhood. Bert and Kelly Slone built their unique 2,845-square-foot dream house in 2023 after overcoming Kelly's stage 4 lymphoma diagnosis. The industrial-modern design features a glass entry "portal" with a swing, an open-air central courtyard, and wheelchair accessibility for aging in place. Despite initial rejection from HOAs, the Slones found an infill lot with existing utilities where their mid-century modern architecture has become a conversation starter. Neighbors and passersby frequently stop to admire and photograph the distinctive home that blends functionality with striking design.
