Good morning, Summit County. Sensitivity is often undervalued in today's world, but for Akron Early College High School student ReAmi Douglas, it became the key that unlocked a prestigious scholarship. Her thoughtful perspective on using sensitivity as "a tool for understanding and compassion" earned her The Summit FM's 2025 Jim Chenot Attitude for Gratitude Scholarship, providing $1,500 toward her educational journey. Meanwhile, the Akron Zoo is celebrating its own kind of motherhood as white-cheeked gibbon Parker prepares to welcome her second baby this summer, giving 3-year-old Lolani a front-row seat to the miracle of family growth.
In a significant development for urban healing, community members are gathering to reimagine the future of Akron's Innerbelt land. This one-mile stretch, acquired by the city in 2021, represents more than just unused highway—it symbolizes an opportunity to address historical wounds from the 1960s-70s displacement of over 700 homes and Black businesses. Though funding challenges exist, the collaborative planning process continues with firms Sasaki, WSP, and others working to transform the space with meaningful community input.

🎓 Student's reflection on sensitivity wins prestigious scholarship. ReAmi Douglas from Akron Early College High School has been awarded The Summit FM's 2025 Jim Chenot Attitude for Gratitude Scholarship. Her insightful perspective that sensitivity can be "a tool for understanding and compassion" resonated deeply with the selection committee. As part of the recognition, ReAmi will also be invited to the radio station for an interview about her educational plans and personal growth.
🦧 Pregnant gibbon brings Mother's Day joy to Akron Zoo. White-cheeked gibbon Parker is expecting her second baby in late June or early July. The new arrival will join 3-year-old sister Lolani, who will benefit from the experience. "It helps her learn how to one day be a mother herself," according to Elena Bell, the zoo's marketing director. The gender remains unknown, with a name announcement planned for after the birth.
🏙️ Akron's Innerbelt redevelopment seeks to heal historical wounds. Community members gathered to discuss the future of decommissioned highway land that displaced over 700 homes and Black businesses in the 1960s-70s. Though a $10 million federal grant for the "Reconnecting West Akron Innerbelt Project" has been frozen, Rep. Emilia Sykes has introduced an amendment to continue funding. The city acquired the one-mile portion in 2021 after the failed highway project never achieved its intended traffic goals. Planning partners include firms Sasaki, WSP, and several others working to transform the space with community input.
