Good morning, Summit County. The search for new faces on Akron's Citizens' Police Oversight Board has turned into quite the competition, with over 20 applicants vying for just three vacant seats. Created in 2022 to recommend police reforms, the board represents a community-driven approach to accountability—though currently without disciplinary powers. The selection process itself reveals interesting dynamics, with Board Chair Kemp Boyd included in the mayor's interviews but notably absent from City Council's selection committee.

Meanwhile, drama unfolded on Stevens Road Monday when fugitive Michael Anthony Reid chose standoff over surrender, barricading himself inside an Akron home as U.S. Marshals and local officers arrived to serve warrants for strangulation and domestic violence. Across town, a different type of standoff is brewing in Ward 1's Democratic primary, where incumbent Samuel DeShazior faces challenges from attorney Emily Durway and community organizer Fran Wilson—all three bringing distinct visions for downtown's future while sharing concerns about housing affordability.

Michael Anthony Reid, 33, was wanted by Akron police for strangulation and domestic violence charges when U.S. Marshals and local officers arrived at a Stevens Road residence Monday afternoon.
