📣 Summit speaks up

Summit County • April 7, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. The streets of Akron and Cuyahoga Falls transformed into seas of passionate citizens this weekend as thousands lined Portage Trail and West Market Street for massive "Hands Off" demonstrations. Creative signs and supportive honks from passing vehicles created an atmosphere of civic engagement, with local leaders including Mayor Malik joining the crowds that gathered at key intersections throughout the area.

Meanwhile, financial tremors are being felt across multiple sectors of our community. Ohio libraries are bracing for a potential $100 million funding reduction over the next two years, threatening services for the state's 7.4 million cardholders. In the business world, Akron-Canton stocks took a nosedive following recent tariff announcements, with Babcock & Wilcox hit particularly hard as its share price plummeted to a record-low 33 cents—adding another layer of economic uncertainty to our local landscape.

📚 Ohio libraries face $100 million funding cut over next two years. Despite claims to the contrary, the Ohio House budget would reduce public library funding compared to the Governor's proposal. The new distribution formula would cut funding to libraries in 39 counties starting July 1, with 2026 funding matching what libraries received 25 years ago. Ohio's libraries operate independently from local governments, requiring state funds to cover building maintenance and operational costs. With over 7.4 million cardholders, Ohio libraries deliver $5 in services for every $1 received.
