🌑 Power pause

Summit County • March 31, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. Darkness descended on Barberton Sunday morning as more than 2,300 homes lost power, leaving residents waiting for FirstEnergy crews to restore electricity by afternoon. The widespread outage stretches from West Hopocan Avenue to Eastern and Fairland roads, affecting daily life across a significant portion of the community as residents navigate their Sunday without essential utilities.

While some neighbors wait for the lights to come back on, there's plenty to celebrate at Akron Children's Hospital, where three critical care units just earned prestigious silver Beacon Awards. The Burn Center, PICU, and 7 Surgical unit have outperformed national benchmarks, with the Burn Unit achieving zero infections over two years. This recognition places Akron Children's among just four pediatric hospitals in Ohio with this distinction—a bright spot of excellence amid concerns about potential funding cuts threatening vital community services like local libraries.
