🎭 Civic treasures

Summit County • March 6, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. Did you know that $17.5 million in tax refunds has flowed back into our community thanks to a single volunteer program? United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance initiative is looking for helping hands to reach their ambitious goal of completing 2,700 returns next year. No tax expertise required—just a willingness to make a difference with free IRS-certified training and flexible scheduling.

Meanwhile, Akron's cultural triangle continues to shape our community's identity in remarkable ways. From the Akron Art Museum's evolution from library basement to Picasso showcase, to the Zoo's transformation from nursery rhyme attraction to immersive wildlife experience, to the crown jewel of downtown—the historic Civic Theatre. Once nearly demolished in 1965, this Mediterranean-inspired venue with its magical starlit ceiling now hosts 500 events annually after $31 million in renovations. Sometimes the most precious community treasures are the ones we almost lost.

🏛️ Akron's cultural trio shapes city's artistic and educational landscape. The Akron Art Museum houses 7,000 works including pieces by Picasso, having evolved from humble beginnings in a library basement to its current historic post office location. Meanwhile, the Akron Zoo offers immersive experiences like sliding through otter exhibits, transforming from a nursery rhyme-themed children's attraction into an accredited zoological park. Completing the cultural triangle, the Akron-Summit County Public Library system has grown from its 1874 origins to 19 branches offering not just books but gaming clubs, lectures, and a "library of things" including art supplies and STEM kits.

🏛️ Historic Akron Civic Theatre narrowly escaped demolition to become downtown's crown jewel. Built in 1929 with a Mediterranean castle theme and starlit sky, the theater faced closure in 1965 before being saved by local philanthropists including the Women's Guild. After a $22 million renovation in 2002 and another $9 million upgrade in 2021, the venue now hosts over 500 events annually across multiple spaces. One of few remaining atmospheric theaters of its kind, it features unique history—including being Akron's first air-conditioned building and once requiring structural reinforcements for elephant performances.
