🎪 Farewell, fair

Stark County • March 12, 2025

Good morning, Stark County. After 73 years of cotton candy and carnival rides, the final curtain has fallen on the Jaycee Fair. The North Canton tradition won't return in 2025 as rising costs have made the beloved event unsustainable. While community members mourn this loss, organizers promise a new tradition is in the works—proving that even our most cherished institutions must sometimes evolve with the times.

Meanwhile, Stark County's new sheriff Eric Weisburn isn't wasting any time tackling the $80 million renovation of the county's 60-year-old jail. Construction begins this summer to transform the outdated facility into a modern pod-style design with improved mental health resources. In environmental news, that mysterious white substance spotted in Nimishillen Creek has been identified as harmless shale and grit from drilling at Arrowhead Golf Club—a small hiccup in the city's larger water improvement project.

🏢 Stark County's new sheriff tackles $80M jail renovation challenge. Eric Weisburn, who took office in January 2025, is prioritizing the long-overdue upgrade to the 60-year-old facility that fails to meet state standards. The renovation will transform the outdated linear jail into a pod-style design with better mental health resources, with construction set to begin this summer. Beyond infrastructure improvements, Weisburn aims to improve workplace culture, add specialized positions for human trafficking and child abuse cases, and implement new technology to keep residents informed about local crime. He clarified that his deputies will not actively participate in immigration raids but may provide support if requested.

🎡 A 73-year North Canton tradition comes to an abrupt end. The Jaycee Fair will not return in 2025 due to mounting financial pressures, including rising venue costs, insurance increases, and security expenses. Eric Smer, the 2025 Jaycee president, announced that while the fair is ending, a new event concept is being planned to create "a great new tradition." Community members expressed sadness at losing the beloved local fair, which had been organized by the North Canton Jaycees (now Stark Community Jaycees) since 1951. The organization has promised to continue other community events despite the fair's discontinuation.

💧 White substance in creek traced to North Canton golf course drilling. The mysterious white material reported in Nimishillen Creek on Monday was identified as shale and grit from a water well drilling project at the city-owned Arrowhead Golf Club. North Canton officials explained that the substance entered the waterway during cleaning of equipment, emphasizing that only water—no drilling fluids—was used in the process. The Stark Soil and Water Conservation District has recommended installing a filter sock to prevent future contamination. This $514,000 project is part of a larger $2 million initiative to replace a city well with higher salt contaminants.
