Scioto County • October 16, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. Twenty-five years is a long time to wait for recognition, but that's exactly how long it took for celebrated gothic illustrator Edward Gorey to finally receive a headstone in Ironton's Woodland Cemetery. The macabre artist, whose distinctive pen-and-ink drawings influenced Tim Burton, now rests beneath a custom marble marker featuring bat motifs—a fitting tribute for someone whose darkly whimsical work continues to captivate fans who make pilgrimages to his previously unmarked grave.
Meanwhile, contrasting stories of community institutions unfold across the region. The Chesapeake library branch remains closed since June due to structural concerns, with officials hoping for restoration pending inspection results. On a brighter note, Community Hospice invites locals to join their Friends of Hospice membership event on October 24, where $20 annual dues support special projects including handmade quilts for patients—proving that even small contributions can provide meaningful comfort.

📚 Chesapeake library remains closed with uncertain future ahead. The Briggs Lawrence County Public Library branch has been shuttered since June due to serious roof and foundation issues. Temporary shoring is being installed to allow for safe inspection of the building and removal of materials to a temporary site. Library officials hope for a full restoration, but the final decision will depend on inspection results and costs, with a determination expected by year's end. Meanwhile, patrons are being directed to other branches, particularly South Point, while programming continues at St. Ann Catholic Church.
🏥 Community Hospice welcomes all to join Friends of Hospice membership event. Scheduled for October 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their Ashland office, attendees will enjoy lunch while learning about this dedicated fundraising group. The Friends of Hospice supports special projects including quilting groups that create handmade quilts for patients. Membership requires no training, costs just $20 annually, and includes participation in their major fundraiser—an annual Pecan Sale held in November and December.
🖋️ Famous artist finally gets his gravestone after 25 years. Author and illustrator Edward Gorey's ashes were interred at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton with his mother in 2000, but remained unmarked until this year. Ironton businessman Rich Donohue created a marble headstone featuring bat motifs and artwork inspired by Gorey's "The Iron Tonic," working with friend Charles Bee Heubach on the design. The macabre illustrator, known for his surrealist style and influence on Tim Burton, never lived in Ironton but chose to bury his mother there where generations of her family rest. Fans have increasingly visited the grave since its location was revealed in a 2018 biography.
