Scioto County • August 13, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. Our community bids farewell to a true craftsman this week as Larry Evans leaves behind not just beautifully restored cars and masterful woodwork, but a legacy of family devotion that spans generations. The 73-year-old Portsmouth native's passing reminds us that our greatest achievements often aren't things we build with our hands, but the lives we touch with our hearts.
Meanwhile, hope rises with each hammer swing as Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on their first Scioto County home since merging operations. The West Portsmouth project will soon provide a single mother with keys to possibility, while across town, River Days organizers are keeping Portsmouth's beloved festival tradition alive despite venue changes. The celebration may be temporarily relocated from its namesake riverfront, but the $34-million development project promises an even grander homecoming in future years.

🔧 Larry Evans, carpenter and car enthusiast, leaves behind a legacy. The 73-year-old Portsmouth native passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Known for his woodworking talents, passion for restoring old cars, and legendary beans and cornbread, Larry was remembered as a strong provider who ensured his family wanted for nothing. He is survived by six children, two sisters, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and his beloved fur babies, Missy and Little Ann, with funeral services scheduled for August 14 at D.W. Swick Funeral Home.
🏠 Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on first Scioto County build since merger. The three-bedroom home in West Portsmouth will provide homeownership for a single mother through the organization's unique approach to affordable housing. Unlike traditional lenders, Habitat doesn't consider credit scores or medical debt, instead requiring "sweat equity" hours and homeowner education classes from participants. The project, already underway with foundation work completed, seeks an additional $25,000 in funding and welcomes volunteers Monday through Friday. Habitat's recent merger has also established a profitable Re-Store in New Boston that supports their housing initiatives.
🎡 Portsmouth's biggest bash is making a comeback despite challenges. River Days, managed by Friends of Portsmouth, has been kept alive through determination as costs rise and venues change. This year's festival features exciting musical acts including a Queen tribute band and hometown stars with special guests. While temporarily relocated from the riverfront due to safety concerns, organizers are eagerly anticipating a return to the river once the city completes its $34-million riverfront development project. The committee welcomes volunteers to help with the festival, emphasizing that anyone with "a little time and a good heart" can contribute.
