🍽 Filling the gap

Good morning, Scioto County. In a region where nearly one in four children faces food insecurity, Lawrence County is stepping up with a powerful solution. The innovative "Fill the Freezer" program launching this Friday at the county fair will transform livestock purchases into essential protein for local food pantries—addressing a critical nutrition gap that saw just 38,000 pounds of protein distributed among 445,000 total pounds of food last year. Lawrence becomes the seventh county to join this life-changing initiative that's already provided 25,000 pounds of meat to vulnerable residents in 2024.

Meanwhile, science is sparking young imaginations as COSI's "Workforce Roadshow" brought hands-on STEM activities to Ohio University Southern, where even four-year-olds explored circuitry, chemistry and virtual reality. For those heading to Kentucky's Rock the Country concert this weekend, plan accordingly—state police warn of significant traffic congestion along US-60 in Boyd County during evening hours.

🍽️ Lawrence County tackles hunger with livestock donation program. The "Fill the Freezer" initiative, launching July 12 at the Lawrence County Fair, allows buyers to donate purchased animals to local food pantries. With 18% of county residents and 24% of children facing food insecurity, the program aims to address the critical shortage of protein—only 38,000 pounds of the 445,000 pounds distributed by Facing Hunger Foodbank last year was protein. Lawrence becomes the seventh county to implement this program, joining others that collectively provided 25,000 pounds of meat to residents in 2024. Community Foundation President Joe Freeman hopes this initiative will help "turn those numbers around" for vulnerable populations.
