Scioto County • June 26, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. Academic excellence is alive and well in our region as two remarkable Carter County students bring home prestigious honors. Sixth-grader Landon Serat impressed judges with a perfect regional score before claiming second place in the state Governor's Cup, while high schooler Lily Gilbert's fire safety project earned international recognition—fitting for a junior firefighter already committed to community protection.
The spirit of collaboration is transforming our economic landscape as five counties and fourteen cities joined forces to welcome Mi De Con to East Park. The industrial contractor's expansion promises to create over two dozen skilled jobs for local residents. Meanwhile, the younger generation got their turn to shine as approximately 50 children gathered at Lawrence County Fairgrounds for Cloverbud Fun Day, creating rainbow tie-dye shirts and forming connections that will last well beyond the upcoming county fair.

🏆 Carter County students shine with remarkable academic achievements. Landon Serat, a sixth-grader at East Carter Middle School, earned second place in the state Governor's Cup Arts and Humanities competition after scoring perfectly in regionals. Lily Gilbert from West Carter High School won the prestigious E. Paul Torrance Beyonder Award at an international Future Problem Solvers competition for her fire safety project. As a junior firefighter herself, Gilbert hopes to inspire the next generation of community protectors. Superintendent Dr. Paul Green and the school board proudly recognized both students during their June meeting, celebrating their exceptional accomplishments.
🏭 Five counties unite to welcome Mi De Con to East Park. The industrial contractor celebrated its Kentucky expansion with a ribbon cutting attended by local government officials. The Ironton, Ohio-based company's new pipe and fab shop is expected to create over two dozen highly skilled jobs in the region. The business development required collaboration between five county judge executives, five fiscal courts, and fourteen cities with their mayors and councils. Boyd County Judge Executive Eric Chaney praised the project as an example of "what happens when you put politics aside" to serve the community.
🍀 Young 4-H members shine at Cloverbud Fun Day. About 50 children and family members gathered at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds for a special event designed for kindergarten through second-grade participants. The day featured games, crafts, and a tie-dye workshop where children created rainbow-themed shirts. Organized by Morgan Klaiber, Kayla Suiter, and other committee members, the event helped connect young Cloverbuds who are too young to show animals at the upcoming fair. The Lawrence County Fair will run from July 7-12 at the fairgrounds.
