Good morning, Scioto County. A shelter-in-place order has been issued near the Kentucky border as hazmat teams tackle an anhydrous ammonia leak from a CSX rail car. The incident has shut down U.S. 23 at Wheeler Hill in the Russell/Flatwoods area, forcing drivers to detour through Flatwoods. As emergency responders work to contain the situation, it's a stark reminder of how quickly our daily routines can be disrupted by industrial incidents.

While some stories make headlines for a day, others endure for generations. Such is the legacy of Greenup County native Jesse Stuart, whose 460+ stories and 50+ novels captured the authentic voice of rural America. His works like "Split Cherry Tree" continue to resonate with readers, preserving northeastern Kentucky's cultural fabric long after his passing in 1984. Meanwhile, in Lawrence County courtrooms, justice took various forms Wednesday as offenders received sentences ranging from rehabilitation programs to prison time for crimes including probation violations and weapons charges.

⚠️ Chemical leak shuts down major Kentucky highway. A small anhydrous ammonia leak from a CSX rail car has closed U.S. 23 at Wheeler Hill in the Russell/Flatwoods area of Kentucky. Authorities have issued a shelter-in-place order for residents near Meade Street and 4th Street as a precautionary measure. Hazmat teams are currently on the scene working to assess and mitigate the situation. Drivers are advised to detour through Flatwoods rather than attempting to use U.S. 23 if traveling toward Russell or Greenup.
