🛣️ Roadway revolution

Scioto County • March 17, 2025

Good morning, Scioto County. After years of community advocacy, Covington's $3.66 million highway shift has finally broken ground, promising to transform neighborhood safety and walkability across multiple districts. What began as a grassroots request in 2016 is now reshaping traffic patterns away from residential areas—a powerful reminder that persistent civic engagement can literally change the direction of our communities.

Meanwhile, history hunters are unearthing forgotten heroes beneath Lawrence County soil as they search for approximately 20 Revolutionary War veterans' graves ahead of America's 250th birthday celebrations. And turning back the clock to 1965, the groundbreaking of Peebles Shopping Center marked a pivotal moment for local commerce, with developer Louis Dobbins betting on Appalachian Highway connections to fuel regional growth—a vision of progress that continues to shape our landscape nearly six decades later.

🚗 Covington begins major highway shift to improve neighborhood safety. After years of planning, crews are now working on Scott and Greenup streets to move Kentucky Highway 17 away from residential areas to Madison Avenue. The $3.66 million project will transform traffic patterns in Eastside, Helentown, Austinburg, and Wallace Woods neighborhoods, converting some traffic signals to stop signs and resurfacing all three streets. Originally requested by neighborhood leaders in 2016, the conversion aims to calm traffic, increase walkability, and potentially boost economic development in these historically community-oriented areas. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is funding the project, which officials believe will create a better quality of life for residents.

🇺🇸 America's revolutionary heroes lie hidden in Lawrence County soil. The Lawrence County America 250 group is working to locate approximately 20 Revolutionary War soldiers' graves that have been lost to time. Led by Rich Donohue, the project is part of broader celebrations for America's 250th birthday in 2026. While they've identified 16 of the estimated 36 Revolutionary soldiers buried in the county, they're seeking the remaining graves to properly honor these forgotten veterans. The group has secured funding for Fourth of July fireworks and is planning additional commemorative events including history books, tree plantings, and historical markers.

🏪 Peebles Shopping Center breaks ground in 1965. Construction began on a massive retail development along State Route 41, featuring five buildings with a 500-foot frontage. Engineer Robert Satterfield detailed plans for masonry structures with brick veneer, spacious parking, and outdoor lighting. Developer Louis Dobbins selected the site after surveying four counties, believing it showed the most promise for growth due to the future Appalachian Highway connection. While construction has started, no tenants have been announced and no completion date has been set.
