๐Ÿš Drones to the rescue

Scioto County • February 28, 2025

โ€‹

Good morning, Scioto County. The future is arriving in unexpected packages across Appalachia. While most of us still wait anxiously for Amazon deliveries, rural Kentucky is watching medical supplies descend from the sky via drones, proving that sometimes the best healthcare solutions don't come by road โ€“ they come by rotor. With 80% of participants giving the aerial delivery service a thumbs up, it seems the region's challenging geography has finally met its match.

Meanwhile, closer to home, CASA of Southern Ohio is expanding its wings into Lawrence County, recruiting everyday heroes to stand up for foster children who need a voice. And for those seeking weekend entertainment that hits closer to home, Cledus T. Judd is bringing his signature country music parodies to Ashland's Paramount Arts Center โ€“ proving that sometimes the best medicine comes with a side of laughter.

๐Ÿค Lawrence County joins fight for foster children with new CASA program. The Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southern Ohio has expanded its reach, offering community members the chance to become voices for vulnerable youth. Volunteers must complete 30 hours of Supreme Court-approved training and pass background checks before being assigned to advocate for foster children. The program, led by executive director Cortney Brumley and volunteer coordinator Lecia Menshouse, ensures advocates meet monthly with children and represent their interests in court proceedings. CASA volunteers typically stay with their assigned children for 12-22 months, providing consistent support throughout their time in foster care.

๐ŸŽญ Country music's favorite parody artist returns to Kentucky stage this weekend. Cledus T. Judd, who's sold 2 million records with his comedic takes on country hits, will headline Ashland's Paramount Arts Center on Saturday. The performer, sober since 2004, is dedicating part of the show's proceeds to Kentucky flood victims and first responders. After briefly retiring in 2015, Judd returned to music at the request of his idol Ray Stevens and now calls the Tri-State area home. His performance promises both laughs and personal stories from his 30-year career in entertainment.

๐Ÿš Rural Kentucky tests drones to deliver vital medical supplies in Appalachia. A groundbreaking pilot study by the University of Kentucky successfully used drones to deliver personal protective equipment to high-risk clients in remote areas. The collaboration between UK's Center of Excellence in Rural Health and USA Drone Port showed 80% participant satisfaction with the delivery process. The initiative proved that drone-based deliveries were safe, feasible, and effective in overcoming geographical barriers to healthcare access. The project's findings are now supporting efforts to expand drone delivery permissions with the FAA.

In a defensive slugfest that would make James Naismith proud, Notre Dame squeezed past Green 36-30, proving that sometimes winning ugly is still winning. The Titans (18-5) found just enough offense to get the job done, though their next opponent Manchester might want to bring a calculator to keep track of all those missed shots.
