Ross County • August 20, 2025
Good morning, Ross County. Imagine standing face-to-face with a woolly mammoth right here in Ohio. While that's no longer possible, the Ross County Historical Society is offering the next best thing on August 30 with Gary Argabright's free presentation on Ice Age megafauna and early humans who once called our region home. Meanwhile, local law enforcement continues their battle against dangerous substances, with Chillicothe police recently seizing significant amounts of cocaine and fentanyl during a search warrant execution on Deerpath Street.
Community spirit shines brightly as four local organizations join forces to support families affected by the paper mill closure. The newly launched Mill City Resiliency Fund aims to provide holiday season assistance through gift cards, demonstrating once again how Ross County residents come together during challenging times. Contributions can be made at VCNB banking centers, United Way offices, or through Mill City Apparel for those looking to help neighbors in need.

🦣 Ancient giants once roamed Ohio alongside early humans. The Ross County Historical Society invites the public to a free presentation by educator Gary Argabright titled "Mammoths, Mastodons and Early Peoples in Ross County at the End of the Ice Age." Scheduled for August 30 from 6:30-7:30pm at the Ross County Heritage Center, the event will explore how these Ice Age megafauna interacted with the area's earliest inhabitants. Argabright will share insights from his research at major paleontological sites across the country. Light refreshments will be served before this educational journey into Ohio's prehistoric past.
🚨 Chillicothe police seize cocaine and fentanyl in drug bust. Officers executed a search warrant on Deerpath Street, recovering 27.5 grams of cocaine, 16 grams of fentanyl, drug trafficking currency, and paraphernalia. Dijon Leeper, 32, of Columbus, was charged with first- and second-degree felony drug possession, with additional charges possible pending lab results. The Chillicothe Police Department encourages those suffering from addiction to contact social worker Joanna Denny, while tips about illegal activity can be reported through their crime tips hotline or email.
🤝 Ross County unites to help those hit by paper mill closure. The Mill City Resiliency Fund has been launched by four local organizations to provide financial support to affected families during the holiday season. United Way of Ross County, Mill City Apparel, Ross County Banking Centers and Ross County Community Action are collaborating to collect donations from across the community. Once fully established, the fund will distribute gift cards to those in need. Contributions can be made at VCNB banking centers, United Way offices, or through Mill City Apparel.
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
