Good morning, Ross County. Beneath the weathered stones of Hopetown Cemetery, history is finding new life as dedicated volunteers restore forgotten markers with careful precision. The Ross County Historical Society's Memorial Committee recently gathered 12 community members to breathe fresh dignity into 20 headstones, preserving stories like that of Dr. Emma Reynolds, Ohio's first Black female doctor, whose legacy will soon be accessible through a simple QR code scan. Meanwhile, a different kind of Ross County tradition continues to rise each morning at Crispie Creme, where fourth-generation owners maintain the distinctive recipes that have delighted local taste buds since 1952.
As Independence Day approaches, Chillicothe is gearing up for celebration with pool parties and fireworks lighting up Yoctangee Park on the Fourth. While you're planning your patriotic festivities, it might be worth brushing up on proper flag etiquette—those stars and stripes come with specific guidelines most Americans aren't aware of, though thankfully, improperly displaying Old Glory won't land you in any legal trouble these days.

🪦 Volunteers breathe new life into forgotten cemetery markers. The Ross County Historical Society Memorial Committee is restoring headstones across the county, focusing on proper care rather than quick cleaning. Recently, 12 volunteers worked together to restore 20 markers at Hopetown Cemetery after receiving specialized training. The committee aims to spread this knowledge to township workers so markers throughout the area can be properly maintained. They're also highlighting significant historical figures, including Dr. Emma Reynolds, Ohio's first Black female doctor, whose marker will feature a QR code linking to her story.
🍩 Crispie Creme donuts have delighted Chillicothe for over 70 years. The family-owned shop, established in 1929 and settling in Ohio by 1952, continues to operate with its distinctive original recipe—different from the similarly-named Krispy Kreme chain. Now run by fourth-generation owners Hallie and Erin Renison, the bakery's classics like glazed donuts and coffee-dippable cake sticks remain customer favorites alongside seasonal specialties. Located on North Bridge Street since 1964, Crispie Creme welcomes donut lovers six days a week from early morning until evening.
🇺🇸 American flag display comes with specific rules most people don't know. The U.S. Flag Code provides guidelines on proper flag etiquette, including flying it from sunrise to sunset or with proper lighting at night. The code prohibits using flag designs on apparel, bedding, and advertising, though patches are permitted on official uniforms. Damaged flags should be properly retired by burning in a ceremony or cutting and burying, not continued to be flown. While these guidelines exist, the Supreme Court ruled in 1990 that breaking the flag code carries no legal penalties.
🎆 Chillicothe celebrates Independence Day with pool party and fireworks. The city's Fourth of July festivities include a pool party at Donald M. Smith Memorial Pool from 7-10 p.m., with tickets costing $15 per person (free for children under one). Downtown trolley service will run from 2-8 p.m., while the fireworks display begins around 9:45 p.m. in Yoctangee Park. Visitors should plan for limited parking and modified traffic flow downtown. The city has also launched an updated website to improve accessibility and community engagement.
