🦅 Weathervane whodunit

Good morning, Ross County. A piece of Chillicothe's history has literally been stolen from the skyline, as the iconic weather vane from the 1940 Gazette Building has mysteriously disappeared, only to resurface with a jaw-dropping $45,000 price tag at a local antique center. This architectural heist raises serious questions about the consistent enforcement of historic district protections that are meant to preserve our community's visual heritage.

Meanwhile, there's a bright forecast on multiple fronts: Ohio's jobless claims dropped to 5,493 last week, bucking the national upward trend. Veterans can circle July 19 on their calendars for a day of appreciation featuring free food, music, and baseball at the Chillicothe VA. And in a transformative housing initiative, Seeds of Hope is creating "Acres of Hope," a tiny home village offering women not just shelter, but a pathway to homeownership—proving that sometimes the biggest solutions come in small packages.

🏛️ Historic weather vane snatched from Gazette building sparks outrage. A retired city superintendent discovered the architectural element for sale at an antique center for $45,000. The 1940 Gazette Building sits within Chillicothe's downtown historic district, where permits are required before making any architectural changes. The writer questions whether local leadership truly protects all historic properties or allows some to "deface historic buildings while others play by the rules." He sarcastically suggests adding "Ye Ole Weather Vane Stew" to a new restaurant's locally-themed menu.

📉 Ohio's jobless claims fell sharply last week. The U.S. Department of Labor reported 5,493 initial unemployment claims in Ohio for the week ending April 19, down from 5,711 the previous week. This local decline contrasts with national trends, as U.S. unemployment claims rose to 222,000 last week, an increase of 6,000. Rhode Island saw the largest percentage jump in weekly claims with a 210.8% increase, while Kentucky experienced the biggest drop at 69.6%.

🏠 Homeless shelter creates tiny home village for women in need. Seeds of Hope in Ross County is building "Acres of Hope," a community of 12 tiny homes that women can rent-to-own after completing transitional phases. Co-directors Greg and Brenda Beard plan to charge affordable rent (approximately $700-800) that includes utilities and maintenance, with a portion going toward ownership. The homes will feature one bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and small loft, with the first three units already funded through cash donations. Seeds of Hope is seeking $150,000 in additional donations to complete the initial homes.
