Preble County • October 14, 2025
Good morning, Preble County. A twist on the old saying might read: "Water, water everywhere, but please don't drink a drop"—at least not without boiling it first. Multiple Montgomery County communities remain under a precautionary water advisory as officials monitor conditions after switching to their second well. The situation serves as a reminder of how quickly essential services can be disrupted in our interconnected communities.
From water woes to waste management challenges, Lewisburg finds itself navigating a garbage collection crisis after their trash truck was damaged in an accident. While village leaders weigh cost-effective solutions, Miami University offers a more uplifting story with its blend of science and art. Pearson Hall's hidden artistic treasures—from Charley Harper's intricate mosaic to DNA-inspired sidewalks—demonstrate how even academic buildings can surprise us with beauty tucked between laboratory doors.

💧 Parts of Montgomery County remain under a boil water advisory. The Jefferson Regional Water Authority issued the precautionary advisory Saturday after switching to its second well. Multiple communities are affected, including Jefferson Township, Jackson Township, Miamisburg, New Lebanon, Moraine, West Carrollton, Germantown, Farmersville, and Trotwood. Officials have not indicated when the advisory might be lifted as they continue to monitor the situation.
🗑️ Lewisburg's trash truck crisis forces village to seek new options. After a driver crashed into the village's garbage truck, Lewisburg is temporarily contracting with Rumpke for emergency waste collection services. Municipal Manager Jeff Sewert recommended council approve bidding for trash and recycling services since the village can't afford Rumpke's $15,000-$16,000 monthly bill while waiting for insurance reimbursement. Though insurance will cover truck repairs, it's unclear if rental costs will be reimbursed. Meanwhile, council approved hiring a part-time firefighter/EMT and police officer to maintain essential community services.
🎨 Pearson Hall hides artistic treasures in plain sight. The Miami University science building features several remarkable artworks that blend biology with aesthetics. "Web of Life," a floor-to-wall mosaic by Charley Harper, honors scientists with animal representations using one-inch ceramic tiles. "Kytos," a sculpture of stainless steel spheres with LED lights, mimics cellular structures, while "Microorganisms" displays 22 framed microbes with interactive QR codes. Even the sidewalks outside feature DNA-inspired patterns, demonstrating how science and humanities intersect in unexpected places on campus.
