Preble County • August 18, 2025
Good morning, Preble County. After a 48-year absence, a familiar restaurant chain is making its triumphant return to Middletown. The new 5,200-square-foot Chick-fil-A opening next month represents more than just waffle fries and chicken sandwiches—it fulfills a decade-old community wish while bringing nearly 100 jobs to the area. Sometimes good things really do come to those who wait, especially when those good things come with special sauce.
Meanwhile, Montgomery County's roads will see increased safety measures as the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign launches this month. With last year's sobering statistics of 536 OVI-related crashes resulting in 43 fatalities, the multi-agency effort aims to prevent further tragedies. In New Lebanon, residents are noticing another absence—Mayor David Nickerson hasn't attended a council meeting since June 3, putting him one absence away from violating attendance requirements despite his emailed assurances he has "no plans to resign."

🍗 Middletown's long-awaited Chick-fil-A finally opens next month. The 5,200-square-foot restaurant on Culbertson Road will bring 90-100 jobs to the area, according to operator Raymond Allan, who's excited about his first franchise. This development fulfills one of residents' top priorities from a decade-old community survey, alongside improved streets and reopened pools—both of which have also been addressed. Ironically, this marks Middletown's return of Chick-fil-A after its original location in Towne Mall closed 48 years ago.
🚔 Montgomery County is cracking down on drunk driving this month. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign runs from August 15 through September 1, uniting 15 police departments, the Sheriff's Office, and Highway Patrol. Last year, Montgomery County reported 536 OVI-related crashes resulting in 43 fatalities and 359 injuries. As of July 31 this year, there have already been 300 impaired driving crashes with 10 deaths. The task force strategically places officers and conducts checkpoints in high-risk areas to remove impaired drivers before fatal crashes occur.
🏛️ New Lebanon mayor mysteriously absent from five consecutive council meetings. David Nickerson, who took office in January 2024, has not attended any village council meetings since June 3, with no public explanation provided. Officials noted during the August 5 meeting that Nickerson can miss only one more meeting before violating the council's 75% attendance requirement—the same rule that led to Councilman Lyndon Perkins' removal in January. Despite his absences and ongoing litigation against him, Nickerson stated via email that he has "no plans to resign" and remains committed to "bettering our community."
