Preble County • July 9, 2025
Good morning, Preble County. The landscape of Miami University is being transformed as over 3,000 solar panels rise along the eastern border of the Oxford campus. This $5 million investment isn't just about clean energy—it's creating an innovative fusion of sustainability and aesthetics, with the panels integrated into a park walkway and garden setting. When completed this fall, the installation will connect to the university's geothermal system, pushing their already impressive 50% carbon footprint reduction even further.
Around the region, housing initiatives are gaining momentum as Wayne County distributes $2 million through its Housing Accelerator Program, funding developments aimed at addressing critical community needs. Meanwhile, there's positive news for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has avoided massive job cuts through natural workforce reduction. The agency has shed about 17,000 positions since January through normal attrition, eliminating the need for the previously considered 80,000-job reduction.

🏠 Wayne County selects funding recipients for housing acceleration program. The Wayne County Housing Accelerator Program has chosen grantees who will receive a portion of the $2 million funding pool. Projects include developments in Richmond and other parts of the county aimed at addressing housing needs. Economic Development Corporation officials emphasized the importance of these initiatives for community growth and sustainability. The program is part of a broader effort to stimulate housing development across Wayne County.
🏥 VA avoids massive job cuts as workforce shrinks naturally. The Department of Veterans Affairs no longer needs a large-scale reduction-in-force after losing about 17,000 employees since January. The agency is on track to reduce staff by nearly 30,000 by September through the federal hiring freeze, resignations, retirements and normal attrition. This natural reduction eliminates the previously considered cut of about 80,000 jobs across the department. VA Secretary Doug Collins stated the department is "headed in the right direction" regarding both staff levels and customer service following a review focused on reducing bureaucracy and improving veteran services.
☀️ Miami University's largest solar panel field takes shape on campus. The $5 million project, featuring over 3,000 panels along the eastern border of the Oxford campus, will have a peak capacity of nearly 2 megawatts when completed this fall. Part of the Sharon and Graham Mitchell Sustainability Park, the installation will connect to Miami's underground geo-thermal system to reduce energy costs. This solar initiative builds on the university's decade-long sustainability efforts, which have already cut their carbon footprint by more than 50%. The innovative project combines renewable energy with a park walkway and garden setting.
