🌿 Cannabis crossroads

Good morning, Preble County. While cannabis might be legal for adult use across Ohio, Miamisburg has drawn a clear line in the sand. The City Council just approved a permanent ban on all cannabis businesses—from growers to dispensaries—replacing their previous temporary restriction. Though the state's upcoming budget bill could potentially override such local control, for now, the city has firmly closed its doors to the budding industry.

Elsewhere in our region, promising developments are taking root. Juanita-Michelle Darden, a seasoned food entrepreneur, now leads the Greater West Dayton Incubator, which has already secured nearly $500,000 in support for underrepresented business owners. Meanwhile, Miami University breaks ground on an impressive $5 million solar field project that will generate enough power for 155 Ohio homes when completed this fall—proving that sustainable innovation continues to flourish in our corner of the Buckeye State.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🚫 Miamisburg bans cannabis businesses with permanent city ordinance. The ban, approved Tuesday by City Council, prohibits growers, processors, and dispensaries within city limits. While adult cannabis use and possession remain legal under Ohio law, municipalities can still control whether businesses operate in their jurisdictions. This permanent ban replaces a previous temporary restriction and will remain unless council members decide to change it. However, Ohio's pending two-year budget bill could potentially override such local control, making city-wide bans unenforceable.

Juanita-Michelle Darden, founder of Soul Food Carryout and former Third Perk Coffeehouse, has been named director of the Greater West Dayton Incubator. The University of Dayton initiative supports underrepresented entrepreneurs through micro-lending, consulting, and educational programs. Since 2020, the incubator has secured over $80,000 in micro-loans and nearly $400,000 in contracts for underrepresented business owners. Darden, who holds a master's degree from UD, plans to increase resource awareness, reactivate the advisory council, and launch a permanent space for the incubator.
