Good morning, Preble County. As May unfolds, mental health takes center stage in our community with the county's Mental Health & Recovery Board seeking new members and NAMI Montgomery County hosting an Open House on May 14. While local calendars fill with meetings and events—from the Board of Elections' special sessions to Eaton Community Schools' hearing on retire-rehire proposals—outdoor enthusiasts should mark their calendars for September's "Amazing 5K Trail Run" at Garber Nature Center. Just be prepared to detour around Magill Road during its eight-week bridge replacement.

Over at Miami University, graduation celebrations are getting an eco-friendly makeover with water-soluble confetti replacing environmentally harmful plastic versions. Campus horticulturist Megan Croswell, who typically spends up to four hours daily picking up traditional confetti during graduation season, will surely welcome this sustainable shift. In more serious news, a 24-year-old man faces charges for allegedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl at Hueston Woods State Park last July.

🎓 Miami University tackles graduation confetti pollution with eco-friendly solution. The university is introducing water-soluble confetti to replace plastic mylar that creates hours of cleanup work and environmental hazards. Campus horticulturist Megan Croswell spends up to four hours daily during graduation season picking up confetti that threatens local ecosystems and creates microplastics. Associated Student Government collaborated with President Crawford to purchase 1,000 cups of biodegradable red and white confetti, though supply chain issues have delayed its arrival until after this year's spring graduation. The initiative aims to help students "make their last impact on Miami a sustainable one."
