🏛️ History's new champion

Preble County • March 11, 2025

Good morning, Preble County. History is getting a fresh champion in our region as Bill Bunch takes the helm at Wayne County Historical Museum. The self-described "lifetime learner" brings no museum experience but plenty of vision—promising everything from wedding dress exhibits to the return of beloved car shows. His ambitious goal to transform the institution into a must-visit destination by 2030 reminds us that sometimes the best preservers of history are those most excited about creating its future.

Meanwhile, science and politics are making headlines at Miami University. While student government senators modified their voting rules to streamline budget approvals (successfully passing previously denied requests), community members took to Oxford Memorial Park in a "Stand Up for Science" rally. About 100 demonstrators lined sidewalks with signs declaring "Science saves lives"—a powerful reminder that some truths transcend political debate, whether in academic governance or scientific research.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

Brewing Locally Image

🏛️ History buff takes helm of Wayne County Historical Museum. Bill Bunch, a self-described "lifetime learner" with multiple degrees but no museum experience, was hired as executive director in January. His background in grant writing and management, coupled with his love for history, made him a strong candidate for revitalizing the museum. Bunch plans to introduce new exhibits and events, including a wedding dress display featuring local families and the return of car shows, Doll Tea, and Literacy Night. His vision is to transform the museum into a destination that regularly offers fresh experiences for both locals and tourists by 2030.

📜 Miami's student government revamps rules to streamline budget process. ASG senators modified their standing rules, requiring a three-fifths majority to pass Internal Operating Budget items instead of the previous two-thirds requirement. The change allowed previously denied budget requests from Student Body President Will Brinley and Secretary of Infrastructure and Sustainability John Day to be approved. Some senators debated the democratic nature of the new voting threshold, with Senator Charles Amara arguing against it while others saw it as creating better consensus. The meeting also addressed student concerns about allergen stations, fire alarm notifications, and dining hall issues.

🔬 Oxford protesters demand politics stay out of science. Miami University students, professors, and community members joined the global "Stand Up for Science" rally at Oxford Memorial Park. Demonstrators lined the sidewalk with signs reading "Science saves lives" and "Science: it's true whether you believe it or not." Organized by professor John Bailer, the event drew about 100 participants calling for an end to scientific censorship, protection of funding, and defense of diversity in science. Participants emphasized that scientific facts shouldn't be influenced by political beliefs and encouraged civic engagement to support science-based policies.
