Powell • August 1, 2025
Good morning, Powell. The passing of 88-year-old farmer Bill Gorton marks the end of an era for Union County. His nearly seven-decade partnership with late wife Charlotte yielded not just crops at Gorton Family Farms, but a harvest of memoriesโworld travels, community service, and an "ornery spirit" that touched everyone from the Milford Center Lions Club to his eight great-grandchildren. His legacy reminds us how deeply agricultural roots run through our community's history.
Meanwhile, green opportunities bloom across the county this month. The Master Gardeners' 21st Annual Plant Sale finds a new home at the Union County Services Center on August 9, featuring everything from native perennials to trendy succulents. And for those seeking substance-free celebration, Soberfest Ohio returns to Franklin County Fairgrounds on August 31, proving that live music, food trucks, and community connection don't require alcohol to create lasting memories.
