Good morning, Portage County. In the quiet hours before dawn Monday, Maple Heights firefighters raced to contain a warehouse fire on Dunham Road that had self-ignited due to the organic composition of stored materials. While the structure escaped damage and no injuries were reported, another emergency situation in our region ended with heartbreaking consequences – a 60-year-old Burton woman lost her life Sunday when a commercial truck collided with her Amish buggy on US-422, a sobering reminder of the diverse transportation methods sharing our roadways.

Northeast Ohio's cultural landscape dims slightly with the passing of Cleveland Pops co-founder Shirley Morgenstern, who died Saturday at 79. Her remarkable 30-year legacy transformed the region's musical scene through her entrepreneurial vision, expanding the orchestra she created with husband Carl Topilow to include a chorus, youth orchestra, and educational programs. Beyond music, Morgenstern's passion extended to animal adoption advocacy and fighting human trafficking, leaving an imprint far beyond the concert hall.
