Good morning, Portage County. Labor Day weekend ended in tragedy at a local landmark when a cliff-diving stunt at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park claimed the life of 32-year-old Akron resident Skyler Correll. Despite immediate lifeguard intervention following his 20-foot somersault gone wrong, Correll was pronounced dead at a nearby hospitalβ€”a sobering reminder of how quickly recreation can turn dangerous at one of our area's most popular summer destinations.

On a brighter note, economic growth continues to flourish locally as Great Day Improvements LLC expands operations in Twinsburg and Walton Hills, bringing 412 new jobs and $22 million in annual payroll to the region. The manufacturing plant in Walton Hills alone will create over 200 positions by November. Meanwhile, Cleveland Heights residents are preparing for a significant decision this fall as voters face the first major charter revision in more than 40 years, with public forums planned to help explain the proposed governance changes.

πŸ’¦ Cliff diving stunt turns deadly at Ohio quarry park. A 32-year-old Akron man died after performing a somersault off a 20-foot cliff at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in Portage County. Lifeguards witnessed Skyler Correll smack the water face-first before briefly surfacing with blood around his nose and then going under again. Despite rescue efforts and CPR by lifeguards, Correll was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly before 5:30 p.m. on August 30, following the Labor Day weekend incident.

πŸ—³οΈ Cleveland Heights voters face major charter overhaul this November. The proposed changes would shift power between the mayor and City Council, giving Council authority to create departments and approve key appointments. This represents the first significant charter revision in over 40 years, aiming to better align with the city's relatively new elected mayor system that replaced the previous city manager government. Council voted 5-2 to place the comprehensive amendments on the ballot as a single issue, despite some members arguing the changes should be voted on separately. Public forums are planned to help voters understand the extensive changes before the November 4 election.
